President's Award in Scholarly Work
Prof. LEE Wai Ming, Albert

Professor

Department of Chemistry
Faculty of Science

Since joining the University nearly twenty years ago, Prof. Lee has always dedicated himself to teaching excellence and innovation. Back when the most common personal computer was an Apple II, Prof. Lee has already been using information technology (IT) to enhance student learning. Prof. Lee involved a number of students in his teaching enhancement projects, and their work was so successful that it resulted in many publications in chemical education journals. Not only did Prof. Lee pioneer the use of IT in teaching in his Department, he continues to lead the way. In 1999 he won an international teaching award: Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology, Tenth International Conference on College Teaching and Learning, Florida. Last year he completed a CD-ROM for the Hong Kong Education Department, which shows secondary teachers and students how to do micro-scale chemistry experiments. Prof. Lee's current efforts are aimed at using web-based teaching for first-year organic chemistry. Prof. Lee's accomplishments in teaching are highly remarkable given that he has always maintained strong research and service records, including heading the Chemistry Department for many years.
