Twenty years ago Prof. Fang and his collaborator proposed a new kind of experimental design, the uniform design. In the last ten years Prof. Fang has been the chief person responsible for the theoretical development and application of the uniform design, and has been able to attract several notable statisticians in the Mainland and overseas to collaborate with him. Because of its advantages many practitioners have adopted the uniform design, and a Uniform Design Society has been formed to promote its usage. Prof. Fang is also well-known for his pioneering contributions to multivariate statistical analysis, experimental design and applications of quasi-Monte Carlo methods to statistics. Because of his outstanding reputation and accomplishments Prof. Fang was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and he was the 9th most cited scientist in Chinese Science Citation Database in 1998. Throughout his academic career Prof. Fang has mentored young researchers. Several of his former students are now well-known statisticians in their own right. Prof. Fang has helped raise the research quality of many colleagues in the University.
