President's Award in Teaching
Prof. CHEUNG Nai-ho, Harris

Professor

Department of Physics
Faculty of Science

Prof. Cheung's seriousness and devotion towards teaching impress all those who come to know him as a teacher. His philosophy is that a physics programme should help students understand how the physical world behaves, and be able to solve problems of a physical nature. To put this philosophy into practice, Prof. Cheung emphasizes, in particular, thoughtful planning and effective delivery on the part of the teacher, and strong motivation on the part of the students. Prof. Cheung has thus taken a proactive role in the planning of curriculum, and he has provided unceasing support to undertake the curriculum reform with a view to improving the learning of his students. Being a sincere teacher, he delivers lectures, assigns problem-sets, and assesses students all for the purpose of facilitating understanding and problem-solving. In laboratory subjects, he encourages students to think as well as to do in the laboratory, and emphasizes the true experimental spirit of thinking + doing in a feedback loop. Prof. Cheung's enthusiasm in teaching has earned him admiration from both students and peers.
