Dr. Zhang Ge

Dr. Zhang Ge is an expert in basic science and clinical translational medicine in orthopaedics and traumatology. He has built an impressive track record of research achievements and won numerous competitive awards. His superior papers have been published in high-impact journals, and he has made sustained and increasing success in winning prestigious research grants.


A prolific researcher, Dr. Zhang has published two manuscripts as corresponding author in the prestigious Nature Medicine with an impact factor of 28.054 in 2012 and 2013. Another manuscript of which he is the corresponding author was accepted by the same journal in 2014. Always eager to present his findings resulting from his great passion for and tireless efforts in research, he has published or presented a total of 86 conference papers in the past five years.


Dr. Zhang has demonstrated remarkable success in attaining external funds — he has secured over HK$12 million from the Research Grants Council, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, mainland government and industry within a short period of two years. Furthermore, he has obtained as the first inventor one patent authorisation and two Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patents. His rising success in securing research funding demonstrates his increasing maturity and great potential for achieving pre-eminence as a research scientist.


For his exemplary accomplishments in research and contributions to the advancement of science and technology, Dr. Zhang has won prestigious awards, including the National Science and Technology Progress Award (2nd class) 2013 conferred by the Ministry of Education of China and the First Prize of Beijing Science and Technology Award 2013 conferred by the Beijing Municipality.


Clearly attesting to his rising academic eminence in his specialised field, Dr. Zhang has been invited by two funding bodies, namely the AO Research Review Commission (Switzerland) and the Medical Research Council (UK) to serve as Grant Reviewer. In addition to being an outstanding researcher, Dr. Zhang has demonstrated his capability to lead, motivate and nurture his research team. Under his guidance, a postdoctoral research fellow and three research postgraduates have won a total of five research-related awards in 2013 and 2014.


A researcher with great networking skills, Dr. Zhang has been actively engaged in off-campus research initiatives of the School of Chinese Medicine and contributed to the expansion of the University’s educational and research endeavours beyond Hong Kong, and to the building of the University’s presence, influence and reputation on the mainland.


The Selection Committee commends Dr. Zhang as an outstanding young researcher with true talents to excel in his scholarly work in the international arena, and therefore recommends him for the President’s Award for Outstanding Young Researcher.
