Professor Cheung Siu Yin's exemplary record of service at the University extends back more than 22 years. During this time she has not only gained the high respect of her students and colleagues for her outstanding teaching qualities but also earned formal recognition from outside the University for her many contributions to curriculum development in Physical Education.

Since joining the University in 1993, Professor Cheung has been consistent in putting into practice her profound belief that higher education should be student-centred, highly flexible and holistic. In her teaching, she adopts mixed modes of practices to stimulate students' learning interest while at the same time accommodating those with different abilities. She is always attentive to students' background and their feedback, and her pedagogies have progressively evolved to suit the requirements of successive generations.

Keeping fully abreast of developments in new technology, Professor Cheung employs e-learning platforms as well as the traditional face-to-face pedagogical approach. Her strategy of engaging students in service learning enriches their experience and also brings many benefits to the community. The fact that many of her students have maintained contact with her after graduation is eloquent testimony to the effectiveness of her teaching and the warm relations she establishes with her students.

In their many tributes, her students say they appreciate her profound knowledge of her discipline and her close integration of theory and practice. One says: "Professor Cheung goes the extra mile to help students and her selfless actions inspired me to go the extra mile too." Another says: "Professor Cheung is a role model to students. Besides teaching knowledge, she enables students to develop a sense of responsibility to the community. She encourages students to serve as volunteers so as to apply what they have learned in the University."

Professor Cheung's dedication to teaching has earned her excellent teaching evaluation scores. She has also received more than HK$8 million in teaching development grants through the University Grants Committee, the Education Bureau, the Quality Education Fund and the University.

Professor Cheung's expertise and professional services are much sought after outside the University. She has been frequently invited to serve on government committees related to curriculum development in Physical Education. For her design of the curriculum on stress management, Professor Cheung was awarded the title of Champion of the Open Contest on Production of Physical Education Teaching Materials for Hong Kong Secondary Schools in 1996, and she was awarded the Certificate of Merit at the Quality Education Fund Outstanding Project Awards in 2008.

In recognition of Professor Cheung's dedicated efforts in guiding and inspiring students in an era of fast-moving developments in teaching and learning, the Selection Committee wholeheartedly recommends her for the President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching.
