Since joining the Department of Marketing in 2014, Dr. Archimedes David Guerra has made a wide variety of valuable contributions through his teaching delivery, curriculum design and development, extra-curricular activities and a variety of other forms of institutional support.
With his great passion for teaching, Dr. Guerra has consistently demonstrated that he can help his students achieve their learning outcomes. His practical pedagogical approach utilises the latest technologies, emphasising action-based learning through experiential activities and modern teaching methodologies such as blended learning and flipped classrooms. By becoming a Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT) in 2018 and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2019, he has demonstrated his devotion to continuous professional development and his ability to meet international standards in the use of technology in teaching and supporting learning in higher education.
Dr. Guerra played a key role in the Department’s collaboration with the Yeh Family Philanthropy under the Nurturing Social Minds Programme. Together with colleagues from the Department of Marketing, he helped develop the innovative course Social Enterprise Management and Social Impact Strategies. The course was the first at the University to be offered to students from different levels and different disciplines and gives students an opportunity to work together in assisting social enterprises and help solve real-world social problems. Under Dr. Guerra’s guidance as the course instructor, one student team was able to help its social venture partner, WashEasy, win a grant of HK$250,000 and create a more positive impact on society by employing people with disabilities and raising public awareness of this issue.
In his institutional support work, Dr. Guerra has been actively involved in the School of Business’ accreditation process and other institutional activities. For the prestigious AACSB international accreditation, he helped draft the School’s Maintenance Report in 2014 and contributed to the development of its Assurance of Learning system. He also supervised the preparation of the Student Report, a key requirement for EQUIS re-accreditation, in 2015 and 2018. Additionally, he has served as the advisor to the School’s student teams competing in local and international case competitions. And currently, in his role as Associate Director, Dr. Guerra provides effective support to the strategic development and management of the MSc in Entrepreneurship and Global Marketing programme.
In 2018 Dr. Guerra obtained a pilot project fund from the Community of Practice for the Internationalisation of Teaching and Learning for broadening students’ intercultural understanding in a diverse learning environment.
As he has developed his use of e-learning, Dr. Guerra has taken time to share his knowledge and experience with the University community and sister institutions by being a facilitator and speaker in events organised by the Centre for Holistic Teaching and Learning such as the Blended and Online Learning and Teaching Summer Course and e-learning workshops.
Dr. Guerra has proved to be an excellent teacher inside the classroom and a valued colleague in multiple supporting roles outside, bringing enormous benefit to his Department and the University as a whole. The Selection Committee is therefore delighted to recommend him for the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching.
