Dr. Li Min
Teaching Division, School of Chinese Medicine
Dr. Li Min stands out as a highly motivated and passionate teacher who demonstrates genuine care for her students. She creates an inspiring learning environment with innovative and interactive pedagogies and is able to stimulate the interest of her students in learning. Dr. Li adopts learner-centred and problem-based approaches to teaching, making extensive use of stimulating activities, field trips and multimedia aids, and inviting patients to her classes. Despite the wide range of duties and responsibilities she shoulders, she always gives high priority to the academic and personal development of her students. Through her proactive interaction with students, Dr. Li serves as a role model for students and remains a source of inspiration throughout their career. She also initiated, designed and taught the first General Education (GE) course offered by the School of Chinese Medicine which has become the most popular GE course in the University.
Dr. Li embraces the teaching philosophy of Whole Person Education. She believes that the core values of traditional Chinese medicine must influence the upcoming generation of Chinese medicine practitioners so that on top of their excellent clinical skills, they can adopt a patient-centred approach, which is marked by good bedside manner and the ability to provide holistic treatment to patients.
Teaching excellence is the trademark of Dr. Li. She has received very positive feedback from students and the courses she teaches are highly sought after. The following are some of the comments made by her students:
“Dr. Li is always sensitive to our needs. We have lab meetings with her regularly. We can tell her our problems and she always tries her best to help us solve them. Furthermore, we can meet Dr. Li in private whenever we have an “emergency”. She is always there for us, through e-mail and phone call.”
“Dr. Li Min is a very strict teacher who sets high standards. She has shown us what a real doctor should be like — great and genuine care for patients as if they are our friends or even families. She delivers medical knowledge very clearly and has high expectations for us. She fulfils HKBU’s goal of whole person education.”
“跟著李敏老師學習,常能讓我對中醫這個行業有新的認識,無論是學術上,或是具體工作上,都對中醫有了新的瞭解。……在培訓一個醫生的過程中,李敏老師不僅著重於學生的專業知識,更注重於學生的德、行,有時不須言語,她對她工作的認真,對病人的尊重和付出,對學生的負責都已經深深影響了學生。”
In addition to clinical teaching delivered on campus, Dr. Li frequently travels to the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine (GDPHCM) to enhance the clinical training provided for her final year students. Dr. Li and her colleagues in the School of Chinese Medicine also conduct mock examinations at GDPHCM and in Hong Kong to prepare her students for the Chinese Medicine Practitioners Licensing Examination (CMPLE). With their concerted efforts, the passing rate of the graduates of the School of Chinese Medicine in CMPLE has jumped from 74% to almost 90% over the past four years.
The Selection Committee highly commends Dr. Li’s outstanding performance in teaching which is exemplary in many ways. In particular, Members are greatly impressed by Dr. Li’s capability to integrate her teaching with research, clinical consultation, curriculum activities and community service.
