Dr. Song Yunya Céline

Dr. Céline Song is widely recognised as an exceptional young researcher in the field of communication whose scholarship straddles English, European and Chinese cultures and media. Her research interest focuses on areas of global communication, online social networks and new media, and she has earned a rising profile through her active collaboration with top scholars from the US, Canada and Europe. Her scholarly work has won her considerable esteem in the Chinese academic arena as testified by her receipt of China’s top national academic paper award.

Since joining the University in 2013, Dr. Song has been awarded two General Research Grants with a 100% success rate and an external grant from the Social Media Lab at Ryerson University, Canada as Principal Investigator. Even at this comparatively early stage in her career, Dr. Song has compiled an impressive record. Her tally of publications includes 11 first-authored journal articles in Social Science Citation Index. She has also published a series of co-edited books, book chapters and dozens of top-tier conference papers. She is frequently invited to serve as speaker at international conferences and workshops, and also serves as a regular reviewer for top-tier journals.

In Dr. Song’s well-rounded training, she has published articles in the field of communication embracing both qualitative and quantitative research methods. She is also working on cutting-edge interdisciplinary projects on computer-mediated networks. She has collaborated closely with computer scientists on the topics of online information diffusion and social networks. Their research work has appeared not only in top-tier social science journals but also in computer science conference proceedings such as at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

A researcher possessing close connection with academics around the world, Dr Song has been actively engaged in collaborative projects with overseas scholars on social media platforms and online forums.  One of the research works on social media discussion of Genetically Modified Food is expected to appear in top-tier conference proceedings and journals, and is considered to have substantial implications for public health.

Dr. Song is editor of the journal Communication & Society, which serves the rapidly expanding research community in Greater China and other parts of the world. It has been accepted into the Taiwan Social Science Citation Index and is officially designated as the first affiliate Chinese-language Journal of the International Communication Association.

The Selection Committee commends Dr. Song as an outstanding young researcher with true talents to excel in her scholarly work in the international arena, and therefore recommends her for the President’s Award for Outstanding Young Researcher.
