Mr. Fan has been a mainstay of the Language Centre for the past 13 years. He has headed the Chinese section of the Centre from its very beginning, and guided it over the years as it developed from a tiny core group into a large section offering a large variety of Chinese and Putonghua subjects to over a thousand students each year. He has skillfully managed both the technical and human sides of the section, and it would be no exaggeration to say that he has made Chinese language teaching in Language Centre what it is today. A sincere, helpful and hardworking colleague who commands respect from all who have worked with him, Mr. Fan has contributed tirelessly to service both within and outside the University. Besides his heavy responsibilities as Coordinator of the Chinese section, he has taken charge of several administrative portfolios, all of which he has executed conscientiously and efficiently. In particular, he has greatly improved the use and awareness of information technology within the Centre, and indirectly contributed a great deal to its communicative and pedagogic effectiveness. Both in terms of the breadth, depth and quality of his service, and his commitment to the Centre and the University, Mr. Fan is a most deserving recipient of this award.
