Prof.
Paau considers that original and penetrative investigation, objective
analysis, perceptive and creative interpretations are the foundations
of serious historical study. The highest goal of historical research,
in his view, is to organize and "weave" together the results
of a series of meticulously researched "pieces" to shed
light on larger or macrohistorical questions. His recent work
- Visions of Civilization: The Search for National Models in Modern
China <文明的憧憬 - 近代中國對民族與國家典範的追尋>,
a product of long term relentless pursuit, is an example of how his
aspirations could be realized. As an active researcher, Prof. Paau
is well-known in the fields of Sino-American relations, modern Chinese
intellectual history, Hong Kong studies and topics related to the
Taiwan Straits. Previously, he had conducted in-depth analysis of
Hong Kong's role in Sino-American relation, and the USA's position
and attitudes towards Hong Kong after its return to China. Recently,
he touched on eastern echoes to western historiography. Apart from
his distinctive achievement in academic research, Prof. Paau is also
very active in academic exchanges. He is much sought after as a speaker
at international conferences and events by academic institutions and
the media over the years.
