Prof. Wong is recognized internationally as one of the leading experts in environmental research. Over the years, he has devoted untiring efforts in research on environmental and natural resources management. More than 200 papers were published in peer reviewed journals, as book chapters and in conference proceedings, and his work is regularly cited in the Science Citation Index. The type of work is not only theoretical but broad and practical, and his research is directed to solving practical problems. Under his directorship, the Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Management serves as an interdisciplinary research and technology transfer centre to enable the practical application of new technologies for sustainable use and maintenance of natural resources, and for environmental remediation in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. Prof. Wong spares no efforts in nurturing young scholars, and helps to set up good research environment by establishing good links to boost national and international cooperation in environmental research. He serves as coordinator of Central and East Asia of the project entitled "Regionally Based Assessment of Persistent Toxic Substances" sponsored by UNEP (United Nation Environmental Programme).
